About the location

PORTHCOTHAN

Watergate Bay 4.7 miles; Padstow 6.7 miles; Newquay 7.7 miles.

Porthcothan is a picturesque hamlet on the north coast of Cornwall between Newquay and Constantine Bay, one of the local "7 Bays for 7 Days", known for its golden sandy beach and legends of smuggling as well as the backdrop for many beach and clifftop scenes in the BBC series Poldark. It is much the same as it always has been, protected from development by the National Trust on one side of the Bay and the owners of the few clifftop houses on the other. The beach is sheltered and much quieter than most and ideal for sunbathing, swimming, surfing and bodyboarding for all ages. Its many coves and rockpools offer endless fun and excitement at low tide. It is lifeguarded and dog friendly.
The adventurous can try extreme sports and coasteering at Watergate; fish, sail, water ski or go boating in Padstow; play golf or tennis at Trevose and St Enodoc, go-kart at St Eval or cycle along the Camel Trail. The choice of activities is endless.
Others enjoy a leisurely stroll along the Coast Path into Padstow and immerse themselves in the region's natural beauty, past the giant stepping stones at Bedruthan Steps, lighthouse at Trevose Head, hidden coves and the 7 Bays whilst spotting local wildlife or simply enjoying the rugged coastline. Pause there to take in its picturesque harbour, indulge in freshly caught seafood and local made fudge and visit Rick Stein's or another of many restaurants and cafes. On your way back you can stock up on essentials at the nearby Tesco Superstore.
Attractions nearby include Tintagel, Port Isaac, St Michael's Mount, Lost Garden of Heligan and Lanhydrock. Families will also enjoy the Eden Project, National Lobster Hatchery, Camel Camel Creek Adventure Park and the Zoo or Blue Reef Aquarium in Newquay.
